The main city is Motul de Carrillo Puerto, called like that after the two of the two most memorable characters from the city, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, the first socialist governor of Yucatan, and his sister Elvia, the first mexican woman elected in a public charge, when women weren´t allowed to vote yet. Both of them are known in a regional and national level for having dedicated their lives to defending their ideals, Felipe with his fight for the defense of the peasant workers that were being exploited by the hacenderos, and Elvia for her women’s right activism. Going to Motul means traveling in time and getting to know the lives and achievements of this two characters, which are part of the esencial history of both the region and the country.
